The Farmers Market
We went to the Farmers Market today at Mathews Courthouse. It was nice, and low key. There were plenty of vegetables to be had for a decent price as well as local seafood and honey. A lady selling her gourmet food sold us a pint of curried chicken, and we had that for lunch with fresh cucumbers and tomatos bought from the local farmers.
We found a very experienced and skilled potter there. She and I had a great time talking about pottery and sculpture in general. She has her own kiln down in New Point. The Mathews County area can be very encouraging to anyone who enjoys making art because there is so much of it around. The Bay Art School has a gallery, and there is another gallery in town, also, that seems to be an artists’ co-op.
The extension office had their booth, and made themselves available to speak to people about their gardens, canning, etc. Renee went and spoke with them, and is really interested in their Master Gardener program. I think that would be great, too, because they learn alot and also get the opportunity to volunteer alot. I hope she’s able to do it.
We ended our trip with a trip to the local ice cream parlor, where they sold very good Hershey’s ice cream. We met a nice waitress there who was not out of high school. She told us she was homeschooled, so working there at the restaurant was very fun for her because she got to talk to and meet so many people. We mentioned that Isaac and Hannah were homeschooled, too, and she was very excited about that. (Isaac and Hannah are going back to school this year, though.)
So, while the Farmers Market easily fit into the courthouse area, we really had a great time. It felt like the best market we had been to since the last time we had been to the Markets of Marion down in Summerfield, Florida near where we used to live. We missed it ever since we got to Virginia, so this was very nice and made us feel more welcome in Mathews County, Virginia – as if we didn’t feel completely welcome as it was!
